The city of Austin is also known for its beautiful scenery, with much of Austin being surrounded by an extensive network of lakes and hills. Despite its size, Austin has a definite small-town feel, together with a superb selection of tourist attractions suiting all tastes.
Visiting Austin: Places to Visit
- Barton Springs Pool, a popular spring-fed swimming pool situated in the downtown district of Austin
- Congress Avenue Bridge, a dominating landmark best known for its unusual inhabitants - around one and a half million bats, which live under the bridge during the summer months
- The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, with colorful gardens and nature trails, situated on the southern side of Austin
- University of Texas, containing a number of museums and art galleries, founded in 1883 and home to around 50,000 students, making it one of the biggest in the USA
- Texas State Cemetery, on the eastern side of Austin, home to many prominent individuals and including an interesting visitor's center
- Governor's Mansion, an important building which has been the residence to almost all of the Texas governors, dating back to the 1860s and containing a large collection of antiques and art works
- Austin State Capitol, one of the biggest capitol buildings in the whole of the United States, located along Congress Street and featuring a magnificent rotunda structure, with guided tours and a lavish interior
- Capitol Complex Visitors Center, with in-depth information and exhibitions about the history of the Austin State Capitol, together with seasonal displays
- Mount Bonnell, dominating the northwestern side of Austin and offering truly breathtaking views of the city and surrounding scenery
- Texas History Museum, home to an important collection of indigenous Indian artifacts
